How to Determine Your Trees Needs When it Comes to Storm Preparation

When people think about summer, they often think about the warm weather, sunny days, and all of the opportunities for fun, relaxation that present themselves when planning their seasonal activities. At Monster Tree Service, summer is also one of our favorite seasons because it's a time for the trees, shrubs, and plants to shine while they soak up the sun and glow in its beautiful light that plays off their foliage and blooms.

While it is an exciting time to make plans, have fun, and unwind, it's essential that you dedicate some time to plan for the care of the trees in your yard, especially with storm season arriving. Summer storms can often cause severe damage to your trees due to heavy rain and high wind speeds.

Imagine it's a rainy summer morning. You take a sip of your coffee, walk over to your front window, and watch as the wind and rain wreak havoc on your yard. Those recently bloomed grape hyacinths are swaying, your yellow daffodils are drooping, and those pink tulips are falling. Not to mention the massive mature tree that established its roots on your yard decades before you called the property your home—is leaning over your home, brand new car, or even worse, a large limb has fallen, causing severe damage to the tree or the property.

Thankfully, with some proper, proactive planning for the care of your trees, you can help to support and prepare your trees for these instances and potentially avoid any disasters from occurring. Monster Tree Service offers teams of professional arborists and plant health care specialists who are expertly trained in ensuring your trees receive the proper care to help prepare them for storm season.

Pruning is one of the most essential services to consider when it comes to storm prep, but how do you know if your tree needs pruning to prep for summer storms? Below are some of the ways our team can help determining pruning needs:

Evaluate for hazardous branches too close to the home

Inspect branches for poor attachments

Inquire if supplemental support is needed

Prune/Remove all damaged and dying branches

Assess Canopy to determine thinning needs

Train young trees to develop a dominant main stem

While pruning is often the best way to prepare for summer storms, your trees may need to be removed in severe cases. However, Monster Tree Service only considers tree removal as a last resort. Our goal is always to help you protect and preserve your trees at all costs.

There are many signs that will indicate it's time for you to consider removing a tree. Much like the scenario, we described above, two of them will be that the tree is coming dangerously close to damaging your property and that its branches keep breaking off.

TREE IS TOO CLOSE TO A HOUSE, GARAGE, SIDEWALK, OR STREET, AND PRUNING WILL NOT SUFFICE TO PROTECT THE PROPERTY:

Trees can grow too low and get in the way of people and vehicles, sometimes causing dangerous situations. When too close to buildings, they can trap moisture and cast too much shade, causing moss, mold, and moisture damage. They also can act as a pathway for insects and small animals onto and into roofs and attics.

DEAD BARK OR BRANCHES IN THE AIR OR ON THE GROUND:

Like all living things, trees shed periodically. Some loss of bark and branches is normal. However, large patches of missing bark, a buildup of many dead branches, large dead or very thin sections of the crown, and hanging branches are all clear signs that the tree needs a visit from a professional.

INSECT OR DISEASE ACTIVITY IS APPARENT:

There are many potential signs and symptoms of insect or disease activity to watch for, including the following:

  • Discolored leaves
  • Early leaf drop
  • Unusual growths on leaves or stems
  • Holes in the bark
  • Sawdust on the ground near the trunk
  • Fungi growing on stems
  • Large pieces of loose bark
  • Large, opaque webs in the tree
  • Sticky fluid dropping from leaves or stems

If you see these or any of the signs we've discussed in this blog and are concerned for your trees or your property, Monster Tree Service is here to help in any way we can. Our teams are here to partner with you and are always ready to visit the property, provide a detailed assessment of the tree, and advise you of your options.
